Numbers — Counting, Place Value, Comparison, Patterns
Lesson 1.2.1 — count in 10s/100s, place value to thousands, read/write, number lines, compare, patterns
Slide 1 / 8

Learning Objectives

  • Count in 10s and 100s up to 1000.
  • Use place value up to thousands.
  • Read and write numbers in numerals and words up to 1000.
  • Describe nearness using number lines.
  • Compare numbers using =, >, < up to 1000.
  • Generate patterns: even/odd and multiples of 2,3,4,5,10 up to 100.

Work through explanation slides, try examples, then practice with interactive activities.

Counting in 10s and 100s

Counting in tens: start at 0 or any multiple of 10 and add 10 each time. Counting in hundreds: add 100 each time.

Try start = 30, step = 10 to count 30, 40, 50 ... or start = 200, step = 100 to count 200, 300, 400 ...

Place Value (Units, Tens, Hundreds, Thousands)

Every digit has a place value. For example, 4 3 7 means 4 hundreds, 3 tens, 7 units → 437. For thousands, 1 2 3 4 = 1 thousand, 2 hundreds, 3 tens, 4 units → 1234.

Change digits and press Build Number to see the numeral and its place-value description.

Read and Write Numbers (Numerals & Words)

Type a number and convert it to words, or type words and convert to numerals. Use standard English words (and optional "and").

Number Lines — Nearness and Position

Use a number line to show how close a number is to another. Move the marker to see distance.

Example: From 0 to 100, point 37 is nearer to 40 than 30; describe using the number line.

Compare Numbers (=, >, <)

Choose a symbol and check whether the comparison is true. The tool will explain why.

Patterns — Even, Odd, and Multiples

Generate sequences to spot patterns and practice identifying even/odd and multiples.

Lesson Quiz

1. Count in tens: what comes after 470?

2. Place value: in 3 5 8, what is the value of 5?

3. Read/write: write 312 in words (choose correct).

4. Compare: which is true?

5. Pattern: which number is odd?
