Standard 5 English: Instructions, Directions & Requests - Responding Appropriately

📢 Instructions, Directions & Requests

Follow · Respond · Distinguish

📖 Why Following Instructions Matters

Instructions, directions, and requests are part of everyday life. Responding correctly shows respect, keeps you safe, and helps you succeed.

✅ In this unit you will learn:

  • Carry out oral instructions on how to perform a task
  • Respond appropriately to instructions from audio-visual materials (videos, announcements)
  • Follow simple directions around the school
  • Respond appropriately to requests
  • Distinguish between instructions and requests

📝 Oral Instructions: Performing a Task

When someone gives you oral instructions, listen carefully, follow the steps in order, and ask questions if you don't understand.

💡 Tips: Pay attention to sequence words (first, then, next, finally).

📖 Listen to these instructions (read aloud or imagine):

"To make a paper airplane: First, fold the paper in half lengthwise. Then, fold the top corners to the center. Next, fold the paper in half again. Finally, fold down the wings on both sides."

📝 What is the FIRST step?

📝 What is the FINAL step?

📺 Audio-Visual Instructions

Instructions can come from videos, announcements, or recorded messages. Listen carefully for key information.

📢 School Announcement (listen carefully):

"Attention all students. The fire drill will begin in five minutes. When you hear the alarm, please leave the building calmly. Walk to the assembly point on the football field. Do not run. Stay with your class. Wait for your teacher to take attendance."

📝 Where should students go during the fire drill?

📝 What should students NOT do?

🗺️ Following Directions Around School

🏫 School Map – Key Locations

📚 Library (North) 🏀 Playground (East) 🍽️ Canteen (South) 🏢 Office (West) 🚻 Toilets (South-East) 🧪 Science Lab (North-East)

📍 You are standing at the main entrance (centre).

📖 Directions to the Library:
"From the main entrance, walk straight ahead. Take the first left. The library will be on your right, next to the science lab."

📝 Which way do you turn to reach the library?

📝 Where is the library located according to the directions?

🙏 Responding to Requests

A request asks someone to do something. Polite responses show respect and willingness to help.

Polite ways to respond:

  • "Of course." / "Certainly."
  • "I'd be happy to help."
  • "Yes, I'll do that right away."
  • If you cannot help: "I'm sorry, I can't right now."
📖 Examples of requests and responses:
• "Could you please pass the salt?" → "Of course. Here you go."
• "Would you mind helping me carry these books?" → "I'd be happy to help."
• "Please close the window." → "Yes, I'll do that."

📝 Choose the best response to: "Could you please help me with my homework?"

📝 Best response when you cannot help: "Please lend me your notes."

🔍 Instructions vs Requests

Instructions tell you what to do. They are often direct and may not include polite words like "please".
Requests ask you to do something politely. They often include words like "please", "could", "would", "may".

Examples:

  • Instruction: "Close the door."
  • Request: "Could you please close the door?"
  • Instruction: "Write your name."
  • Request: "Please write your name."
📖 Identify whether each is an instruction or a request:
"Sit down." → Instruction
"Please sit down." → Request
"Could you please help me?" → Request
"Finish your homework." → Instruction

📝 Is this an instruction or a request? "Please pass the salt."

📝 Is this an instruction or a request? "Turn off the lights."
