Instructions and Directions
Welcome, Accurate Listener!
Today you will practise listening carefully to oral instructions and directions. You will follow instructions for a procedure, follow instructions for playing a game, and follow directions from a point in the village or town to school.
How to listen to instructions
Instructions tell you what to do and the order in which to do it.
Order words
first, next, then, after that, finally
Action verbs
cut, fold, mix, place, draw, write, turn
Important details
materials, time, place, number of steps, safety warnings
Check understanding
Ask yourself: What should I do first? What comes next?
Oral Procedure 1: Make a paper bookmark
Listen to the procedure. Then answer the questions.
First, take a rectangular piece of paper. Next, fold the paper in half lengthwise. Then, write your name at the top. After that, draw three small pictures of books in the middle. Finally, colour the bookmark neatly and place it inside your reading book.
Sequence the procedure
Good listeners can put steps in the correct order.
- Take a rectangular piece of paper.
- Fold the paper in half lengthwise.
- Write your name at the top.
- Draw three small pictures of books.
- Colour the bookmark and place it inside your reading book.
Listen for warnings and conditions
Some oral instructions include warnings or conditions. These help you avoid mistakes.
First, open your science notebook. Next, draw a table with three columns. Do not write outside the margin. If you make a mistake, cross it out neatly. Finally, write today’s date above the table.
Game instructions: Word Relay
Listen to the instructions for playing a classroom game.
First, form two teams with the same number of players. Next, the first player in each team writes one noun on the board. Then, the next player writes an adjective that can describe that noun. After that, the third player writes a sentence using both words. The team gets one point if the sentence is correct. The team with the most points after five rounds wins.
Understand rules, turns, and winning
When listening to game instructions, identify players, turns, actions, scoring, and how to win.
