Standard 7 Mathematics: Directed Numbers
Module 1: Numbers and Operations — Lesson 1.2: Positive numbers, negative numbers and ordering directed numbers.
Slide 1 / 9
Welcome ➕➖
Today we learn directed numbers
In this lesson, we shall gain knowledge on directed numbers.
We shall identify positive and negative numbers, locate them on a number line, connect them to real-life situations, and order directed numbers in ascending and descending order.

Today we learn directed numbers.
Directed numbers can be positive, negative or zero.
We shall order them using a number line.
−5, 0, +5
Directed numbers show direction from zero: positive numbers go right, negative numbers go left.
Standard 7 focus: use the number line to justify your answer.
Objective 1.2.1.1
Identify positive and negative numbers
Positive numbers
Greater than zero.
+3
+12
Negative numbers
Less than zero.
−4
−15
Zero
Neither positive nor negative.

Positive numbers may be written with a plus sign or without it: +7 = 7.
Negative numbers must show the minus sign: −7.
Negative numbers must show the minus sign: −7.

Number Line
Directed numbers on a number line
Numbers increase as you move to the right.
Numbers decrease as you move to the left.
Every negative number is less than zero.

Objective 1.2.1.2
Order directed numbers in ascending order
Ascending order means from smallest to greatest.
On a number line, ascending order goes from left to right.
The more negative a number is, the smaller it is.
−9 < −4 < 0 < +3 < +8
Arrange in ascending order: −2, 5, −7, 0, 3
−7, −2, 0, 3, 5
5, 3, 0, −2, −7
−2, −7, 0, 3, 5
Type the smallest number: −4, −10, 2, 0
Descending Order
Order directed numbers in descending order
Descending order means from greatest to smallest.
On a number line, descending order goes from right to left.
+10 > +4 > 0 > −3 > −8
Arrange in descending order: −6, 4, −1, 8, 0
−6, −1, 0, 4, 8
8, 4, 0, −1, −6
8, 0, 4, −1, −6
Type the greatest number: −15, −3, 0, 7
Interactive Ordering Challenge
Sort numbers by reasoning
Type the numbers in ascending order.
Remember: the number furthest left on the number line is the smallest.
Numbers to order: −8, 6, −2, 0, 4
Explain the first number in your order.
−8 is smallest because it is furthest left on the number line
6 is smallest because it has the largest digit
0 is always the smallest number
Mixed Practice
Compare, classify and order
